DIMENSION X Dimension X was first heard on NBC April 8, 1950, and ran until September 29, 1951. Strange that so little good science fiction came out of radio; they seem ideally compatible, both relying heavily on imagination. Some fine isolated science fiction stories were developed on the great anthology shows, Suspense and Escape . But until the premiere of Dimension X -- a full two decades after network radio was established -- there were no major science fiction series of broad appeal to...

CHET CHETTER'S TALES FROM THE MORGUE Chet Chetter's Tales from the Morgue is a series of short stories as told by an old obliging morgue attendant, licensed embalmer and resident story teller named Chet Chetter to a passing stranger of the night played by you the listener. The stories Chet relates to us are all quite fanciful. They deal with topics that would be classified supernatural and science fiction. They border on outrageous but that is how they are meant to be. Roughly half of the shows...

Old Time Radio Programs "Sunrise and Sunset, Promise and Fulfilment, Birth and Death, The whole Drama of Life is played out in the Sands of Time" This is a great series where the main theme seems to be Retribution. Imported from Austrailia it ran from 1946 until 1948. Stories as told by Father Time. Sort of like Twilight Zone for the radio.

An aircheck from Halloween night 1973. A night of radio drama starting with a local version of War of the Worlds, Arch Obler's "The Darkness", a show on Vampires, A ghost story called "The Bed", "People Places and Things - a 30" piece on UFO's. Including actual commercials from the time period in Buffalo, NY. All pieces were performed by DJ's at the station at the time. The DJ for the War of the Worlds was known as Shane, who seemed to be the archetype for the hip...

THEATER FIVE Theater Five was ABC's attempt to revive radio drama during the early 1960s. The series name was derived from its time slot, 5:00 PM. Running Monday through Friday, it was an anthology of short stories, each about 20 minutes long. News programs and commercials filled out the full 30 minutes. There was a good bit of science fiction and some of the plots seem to have been taken from the daily newspaper. Fred Foy, of The Lone Ranger fame, was an ABC staff announcer in the early 60s,...
